Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 15

Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes psyche, solus, semi and tri as well as the roots fac, mov, spec and therm.

PREFIXES

The prefix psyche means “mind” or "soul". You have seen this prefix in the word psychology.

The prefix solo means "alone". Have you heard of the expression "flying solo"?

The prefix semi means “half”. Perhaps, you have seen a semi-trailer truck on the road.

The prefix tri means “three”. If you are a baseball fan, you know what a triple play is.

ROOTS

The root fac (and its variants (and its variants fact, fec, and fic) means “make” or "do". You probably know what workers do in a factory, right?

The root mov (and its variants mob and mot) means “move”. Do you recognize the phrase Full Motion Video (FMV)?

The root spec (and its variants spect and spic) means "look". My grandfather referred to his eyeglasses as his spectacles.

The root therm means “heat”. I hope that we never have a thermo-nuclear war.
